How to Choose a Game Console

Here is a quick guide to choosing the best video game console for you and your kids.

Difficulty Level: easy      Time Required: 120 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Decide who the system is for - parents or kids.
  2. Consider purchasing a new versus a used (legacy) system.
  3. Think about what genre of games interest you most - RPG, adventure, puzzle, etc.
  4. Survey all new consoles (N64, Playstation, Dreamcast).
  5. Visit older systems for cost efficiency (Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari).
  6. The most important step: go to a toy store and try out any console you're considering.
  7. If you like adventure games, consider an N64.
  8. If RPGs are your thing, look seriously at Playstation.
  9. If you need to own the hottest, newest 3d graphics system, try Dreamcast.
  10. If you want a system you can carry with you, think about getting a Gameboy.
Tips:
  1. It's really important to try out the console you're thinking of getting - don't rely exclusively on reviews or recommendations.
  2. If a used system is acceptable, you can save a lot of money with a second-hand console.
  3. Think you don't need an extra control pad? Think again. You never know when a button or connector could go out.
